In a highly publicized trial, French actor Gérard Depardieu appeared in a Paris court to answer charges of sexual assault against two women during the filming of Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters) in 2021. The 76-year-old star, known for his extensive film career with over 200 titles to his name, is the most notable individual from the French cinema industry to confront such serious allegations since the onset of the #MeToo movement.
As he arrived at the courthouse clad in a black suit and trainers, a substantial police presence was deployed, while outside, crowds of protesters rallied, chanting, “Victims, we believe you; rapists, we see you.” This outcry reflects a broader societal movement demanding accountability from powerful figures accused of sexual misconduct.
During the hearing, which marks a significant moment in both his career and the ongoing conversation about sexual harassment in the entertainment industry, Depardieu confirmed his identity to the panel of three judges, indicating his readiness to respond to the charges against him. Testimony is anticipated to commence this Tuesday.
The charges against Depardieu include the sexual assault of a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant director. The first incident allegedly occurred on September 10, 2021, when he reportedly trapped the set dresser, inappropriately touching her and using obscene language before bodyguards intervened. Witnesses, including colleagues of the set dresser, corroborated her account, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.
In a separate incident on August 31 and September 2021, Depardieu is accused of groping the assistant director, who reportedly confided in friends about his inappropriate contact. Depardieu's attorney, Jérémié Assous, has categorically denied all allegations, asserting that "Truth is on our side," while maintaining the defense that the investigation was biased against the actor.
The judges dismissed requests from the defense to terminate the case, emphasizing the integrity of the investigation. Prosecutors and victim advocates argued the merits of proceeding with the trial, stating it is important for justice to be served.
This trial had originally been postponed due to claims regarding Depardieu's deteriorating health, with prior reports indicating he underwent a quadruple heart bypass and struggles with diabetes. However, recent assessments confirmed he was fit to stand trial, albeit with certain accommodations regarding his health during court proceedings.
This case holds significance beyond the courtroom, as it is the first to move forward against Depardieu despite multiple accusations. At least 20 women have come forward with allegations of inappropriate behavior, though many cases could not progress due to statutes of limitations.
One of the earliest complaints came from actress Charlotte Arnould, who charged Depardieu with rape and sexual assault dating back to 2018 when she was just 22 years old. Depardieu has fervently denied all wrongdoing, claiming any interactions were consensual. As the trial progresses, Arnould and others are closely observing the proceedings.
In a related note, fellow actors such as Anouk Grinberg have publicly stated that instances of unprofessional conduct from Depardieu were commonplace during filming, urging that producers were aware of his problematic behavior.
As the trial continues, it symbolizes a crucial moment not just in Depardieu's life but also in France's cultural reckoning with sexual abuse, shedding light on the need for systemic change in the industry to protect those who work behind the scenes. The outcome remains to be seen as the court delves deeper into these serious allegations.
