Dubbed a perigean full moon or supermoon, October's Hunter's Moon will shine about 30% brighter and appear nearly 15% larger than a full moon at its farthest point from Earth. Want the best view? Look to the east at moonrise; officially full at 7:26 a.m. EDT, its brilliance will be visible both the night before and the night after.

Celestial Companions

As the moon ascends into the night sky, it will share the stage with two of our solar system's giants. You'll find Saturn hovering to the moon's upper right and Jupiter rising just below to the left, emerging about an hour after the Hunter's Moon. Don't miss the following night, Sunday, October 20, when the moon and Jupiter will rise together, creating a visually spectacular scene!

Historical Significance

Historically, the Hunter's Moon received its name as a reminder for hunters to prepare for the winter months ahead. This age-old tradition has Anglo-Saxon roots, and other names for this full moon include the Falling Leaves Moon and the captivating Blood Moon. Be cautious, though! The latter can often create confusion with the total lunar eclipse's blood moon, which boasts a striking red hue due to the Earth's shadow.

Autumn Onset

Moreover, the Hunter's Moon will also mark the official onset of fall, coming just after the Harvest Moon that rose on September 17, following the autumnal equinox on September 22.
