CINCINNATI — This October, sky enthusiasts will be treated to a spectacular cosmic event as the full moon rises, marking the third of four consecutive “supermoons.” What sets this supermoon apart? According to NASA, it’s on track to be the brightest full moon of 2024!

Mark your calendars for the night of Wednesday into Thursday, as this stunning celestial spectacle promises a view unlike any other.

For those in the Tri-State area, there’s an exciting opportunity to experience the brilliance of the supermoon firsthand.

Local astronomer Dean Regas will be hosting a public viewing party on Wednesday evening at Ault Park Pavilion, located at 5090 Observatory Circle. This exciting event is completely free and kicks off at 6 p.m. and will continue until 8 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to explore various telescope designs, gain insights into the Moon’s mysteries, and potentially catch glimpses of a newly discovered comet if the weather allows!

But it doesn’t end there!

For anyone unable to attend the viewing party, the Cincinnati Public Library has got you covered. In collaboration with Dean Regas and the Cincinnati Observatory, library cardholders can borrow ten Orion StarBlast 4.5-inch astronomical telescopes at no cost, making it easier than ever to admire the supermoon from the comfort of home.

What Exactly is a Supermoon?

Wondering what a supermoon really is? It’s defined as a new or full moon that is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, known as perigee. The moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle but rather an elliptical path, causing fluctuations in its distance from our planet. This particular supermoon will shine bright at about 222,000 miles from Earth—quite close compared to apogee, when it is around 253,000 miles away.

NASA reveals that supermoons can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the dimmest full moon of the year, offering an extraordinary viewing experience.

October’s full moon is traditionally referred to as the “hunter’s moon.”

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, this name signifies the time to prepare for winter hunting activities, as the foliage begins to drop.

Don’t Miss Out!

Prepare your cameras, gather your friends and family, and embrace the wonder of the skies. Whether you’re attending the viewing party or stargazing from home, this supermoon promises to be a highlight of the year you won’t want to miss! Get ready to be awed by nature’s brilliance on this enchanting night!
