Google Integrates Nest Cam Management into Home App: A Game-Changer for Users!

In a major update, Google has made it possible for users to manage all of their Nest Cam devices, including the Nest Cam IQ indoor and outdoor cameras released in 2017, directly through the Google Home app. This integration means that users can now access and control all their Nest cameras from as early as 2015, eliminating the need for the separate Nest app.

Over the past year, Google has been gradually transitioning Nest cam users to the Home app. With this latest update, users can enjoy a more streamlined experience by reviewing video histories in event and timeline views, adjusting camera settings, and more—all without toggling between multiple apps. The Home app also allows users to view live streams from their favorite cameras and set up automations to enhance security and convenience.

To participate in this public preview, users can simply go into the Home app or visit home.google.com. Google informs that those already enrolled in the public preview will begin to see prompts within both the Nest and Google Home apps, guiding them on how to transfer their Nest Cam services smoothly. The roll-out of this feature is set to begin this week. Importantly, should users wish to revert their Nest Cam IQ devices back to the Nest app, Google has confirmed that this option will remain available.

Additionally, Google is allowing management of the Nest Hub Max devices through the Home app, however, there is a notable twist: once transferred in, these devices cannot be sent back to the Nest app.

Previously, Google had already facilitated the transfer of devices such as the Nest Cam Indoor (wired, first-gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, first-gen), and the Nest Hello/Nest Doorbell (wired, first-gen) to the Home app. The tech giant assures users that it will continue to support the Nest app, maintaining that there are no immediate changes to its functionality.

Currently, the Nest Protect smoke detector and the Nest x Yale door lock remain exclusive to the Nest app, as they are not supported in the Home app yet. This move represents a significant step forward in consolidating home automation tools under a single platform, enhancing user experience and simplifying device management.

Is this finally the end of the Nest app as we know it? Only time will tell, but for now, Google enthusiasts can rejoice in a unified management system that promises greater ease and access.
