In a cosmic twist of fate, astronomers have reported that the newly discovered green comet, known as Comet SWAN, is likely breaking apart as it swings perilously close to the sun, crushing hopes for a breathtaking naked-eye viewing.
Originating from the enigmatic Oort Cloud beyond Pluto, Comet SWAN has dazzled onlookers over the past few weeks, boasting a stunning tail visible via telescopes and binoculars. However, experts warn that its recent solar pass may have sealed its fate.
Astrophysicist Karl Battams from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory ominously stated, "We’ll soon be left with just a dusty rubble pile." This fascinating celestial body, composed of ancient frozen gas and dust, represents a piece of our solar system's formative years.
Jason Ybarra, director of the West Virginia University Planetarium and Observatory, commented on the comet’s significance: "These are relics from when the solar system first formed." The comet was serendipitously discovered by amateur astronomers who spotted it in photographs from a spacecraft operated by NASA and the European Space Agency.
Unlike the spectacular sightings of past comets such as Tsuchinshan-Atlas last year, or Neowise in 2020, Comet SWAN will not make a close approach to Earth. Its trajectory had initially promised some potential visibility, positioned just after dusk slightly north of the sunset, though its green hue may have remained elusive to the naked eye.
This journey through the inner solar system could be a first for Comet SWAN, making it especially prone to fragmentation. As it travels farther away, the remaining fragments will drift into the depths of space, possibly never to return. Battams poignantly noted, "It’s going to go so far out that we have no idea if it’s ever going to return." What could have been a spectacular celestial event may soon fade into a distant memory.
