CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a devastating blow for the Carolina Panthers, linebacker Shaq Thompson has suffered a season-ending injury for the second consecutive year.

Thompson tore his Achilles tendon during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 34-24 defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals, leaving fans and teammates reeling.

Thompson, who was drafted 25th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft from the University of Washington, had previously endured a broken fibula in Week 2 of last season, also leading to an abrupt end to his campaign. This latest setback raises serious concerns about his long-term health and future with the team.

Despite this bleak situation, Thompson remains undeterred.

The 30-year-old took to Instagram, stating emphatically, "Y'all think ima retire!! Ahah yeah right! I’ll [be] back!" His determination is a testament to his character and love for the game, as he not only misses playing time but also the chance to contribute as a vocal leader on a struggling team.

In addition to Thompson, the Panthers will also be without linebacker Josey Jewell.

for a couple of weeks due to a hamstring/groin injury suffered in the same game. This means the Panthers' defense will have to rely on rookie Trevin Wallace and third-year player Chandler Wooten to step up in Thompson's absence.

Head coach Dave Canales expressed his disappointment over Thompson's injury,

highlighting the impact the linebacker has had on the team. "Just sick for Shaq," he said. "He plays with so much passion, and he's someone I can always count on to lead." Thompson has been a cornerstone of the Panthers’ defense and a key figure since their impressive 15-1 season in 2015, which led to a Super Bowl appearance.

As the Panthers struggle this season, currently sitting at 1-3,

the loss of Thompson is particularly hard to swallow. With only one winning season since their Super Bowl run, fans are left wondering how much longer the team can endure setbacks without its key players.

Interestingly, there has been some speculation about the playing surface at Bank of America Stadium.

Thompson, known for advocating for the switch from artificial turf to natural grass, expressed concern over player safety last year. His non-contact injury occurred at a time when discussions about turf-related injuries are more relevant than ever, especially among players and coaches.

"Our last owner [Jerry Richardson] had grass, and we need to listen to our players,"
