In a tragic turn of events, the San Francisco 49ers are once again enveloped in sorrow as left tackle Trent Williams and his wife, Sondra, have suffered the loss of their newborn son, Trenton O’Brien Williams Jr., who passed away shortly after birth on November 24.

Sondra took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news, revealing that their son was diagnosed with Trisomy 13, a rare genetic disorder that significantly increases the risk of serious health complications. She also disclosed the earlier loss of a twin daughter during the pregnancy, a pain that has deeply affected the family.

“My Forever Angel, Trenton O’Brien Williams Jr. It’s been extremely hard trying to process the saddest Hello and Goodbye that I’ve ever had to endure,” Sondra wrote, expressing her grief. "My first born and only son, I’ve always wanted you. But God wanted and needed you more. I’m at peace knowing you will never have to suffer. Although I will never hear your soft coos and cries or see those beautiful little eyes staring up at me, I am grateful to God for the time I shared with you.”

Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the devastating news to reporters in a conference call, detailing Trent Williams' presence at the hospital during this incredibly difficult time.

“He was at the hospital with her and got to meet him and say bye. Then he had to cremate him on Friday,” Shanahan stated. “He’s been dealing with it and working through it. We’re all just trying to be here for him through it all.”

Sondra Williams disclosed that their son passed away at 11:38 p.m., five weeks before his due date.

Trent Williams, who was listed as questionable for the 49ers’ game against the Green Bay Packers, opted not to travel that day, prioritizing his family during this tragic moment.

In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, it’s worth noting that this is the second tragedy to strike the 49ers in just a month.

Cornerback Charvarius “Mooney” Ward faced his own devastating loss when his 23-month-old daughter, Amani Joy, passed away. She had been born with Down syndrome and struggled with several health issues. After taking time off to grieve, Ward made an emotional return to the field against the Buffalo Bills.

Shanahan spoke candidly about the team's ability to rally around their players during times of tragedy.

“It’s hard as a coach, it’s hard as a friend, it’s hard as a family member, it’s hard for everybody,” he remarked. “But we spend a lot of time together and that’s what’s cool about a football team. Whatever you go through, the good or the bad, we go through it together.”

Trent Williams, at 36 years old and an 11-time Pro Bowl selection, has been a pivotal player for the 49ers since joining the team in 2020.

Known for being the NFL’s highest-paid left tackle, Williams is on the mend from an ankle injury and is eager to return to the field as soon as he has recovered.

As the team supports Williams through this painful period, fans and fellow players alike are sending their thoughts and prayers to the Williams family in these trying times.

The strength shown by the Williams family and their teammates serves as a poignant reminder of the bonds that hold them together both on and off the field.
