Hong Kong Welcomes Groundbreaking Hybrid Ferries to Enhance Commuter Services!
In an exciting development for Hong Kong's transportation landscape, Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry Limited (HKKF) has officially taken delivery of two sophisticated hybrid ferries, marking a significant step towards more sustainable public transport. Designed by the renowned naval architecture firm Incat Crowther and constructed by Cheoy Lee Shipyards, these state-of-the-art vessels are set to revolutionize commuter travel across the region's busy waterways.
Key Features and Design
Measuring an impressive 40 meters in length, each ferry boasts the capacity to carry up to 450 passengers, catering to the high demand on commuter routes to popular destinations including Lamma Island, Peng Chau, and Hei Ling Chau. What sets these ferries apart is their innovative design: one features a cutting-edge carbon hull, while the remaining ferries in the order will be constructed with lightweight aluminum hulls. This blend of materials not only enhances performance but also promotes environmental sustainability.
Sustainability and Technology
Equipped with hybrid drive trains and state-of-the-art lithium-ion energy storage systems, these ferries can operate in a zero-emissions mode during slow transit, berthing, and maneuvering—proving that functionality and eco-friendliness can go hand-in-hand. Additionally, they will be fitted with advanced exhaust treatment technology and an estimated 30 square meters of solar panels, ensuring that onboard power needs are met with zero emissions.
Passenger Comfort and Capacity
Passenger comfort is also a priority, with accommodations for 300 passengers on the main deck and an additional 150 on the upper deck. The ferries are designed with practicality in mind, featuring bike hangers, lavatory facilities, a 10m² cargo hold, and extra luggage storage options.
Future Expansion Plans
HKKF has ambitious plans, with a total fleet expansion involving nine new ferries: seven measuring 40 meters—two of which are the newly delivered hybrid vessels—and two shorter 35-meter vessels. The arrival of these hybrid ferries follows the earlier delivery of two conventional diesel-powered 40-meter ferries, with the remaining five vessels expected to be completed by 2025.
A Greener Future for Commuting
This modernization effort is poised to replace HKKF's older conventionally powered fleet, which has been in service since the late '90s, paving the way for a greener and more efficient transportation system.
