Hong Kong's renowned ferry operator, Sun Ferry, has officially welcomed its latest addition, a state-of-the-art hybrid catamaran named Xin Ming Zhu III ("New Pearl III"). This impressive vessel was constructed by Guangdong Sinoway Composite Materials, a division of the prominent China Shipbuilding Group.
The Xin Ming Zhu III is classified by the China Classification Society and joins the ranks of other advanced ferries, including the Xin Ming Zhu VI, which was launched for Sun Ferry in 2024. This new addition is set to enhance the passenger experience in the bustling Victoria Harbour and offer vital commuting services to some of Hong Kong's picturesque outlying islands, working alongside other ferries in the Sun Ferry fleet.
With impressive dimensions — an overall length of 44.75 meters, a beam of 11 meters, and a draught of 1.37 meters — the Xin Ming Zhu III can accommodate five crew members and up to 500 passengers comfortably. Notably, the utilization of carbon-fibre composite materials for both the hull and superstructure significantly reduces the vessel's weight, minimizes noise levels, and bolsters its resistance to corrosion, making it a perfect fit for the demanding marine environment of Hong Kong.
What truly sets this ferry apart is its innovative hybrid electric propulsion system. This cutting-edge technology comprises two lithium iron phosphate batteries with a total capacity of 645 kWh, paired with two main diesel engines that drive waterjets. This hybrid system not only promises to lower emissions and enhance energy efficiency but also aligns with Hong Kong's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options amidst urban congestion.
As the world moves towards greener transportation solutions, the Xin Ming Zhu III stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s commitment to enhancing its public transport fleet while preserving the beauty of its waterfront. Will this new ferry redefine the future of commuting in Hong Kong? Stay tuned for updates on this exciting journey!
