In a swift response to the impending threat of Hurricane Milton, currently a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds reaching 155 mph, the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning have relocated their training operations to Raleigh, North Carolina. This strategic move is aimed at ensuring the team's safety and readiness ahead of their season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes scheduled for Friday night.

As the hurricane approaches, forecasts predict a devastating storm surge of up to 15 feet in the Tampa Bay area, prompting evacuation orders across Florida's Gulf Coast. Local authorities are urging residents to heed these warnings as the storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday night.

The American Athletic Conference has rescheduled the college football game between Memphis and South Florida from Friday night to Saturday in light of the storm. South Florida’s football team is relocating to Orlando, while UCF has shifted various athletic events, including a home volleyball match originally set for Wednesday night to Sunday, and a women's soccer game moved to Houston.

Other postponements have affected a range of sports, including a women's soccer match in Boca Raton, now rescheduled for October 17, and the LPGA tour has also postponed its Q-Series qualifying event scheduled to begin Sunday in Venice, Florida. The organization emphasized that the safety of all individuals involved is their highest priority.

High school sports across Florida are facing interruptions as well, with many officials waiting to ascertain whether Thursday and Friday football games will proceed as planned.
