The recent trade involving Luka Doncic isn't the only storm brewing within the Mavericks organization. Reports have emerged, revealing underlying tensions that date back to a controversial decision made by general manager Nico Harrison.

In August 2023, Harrison made headlines when he fired Casey Smith, a beloved longtime staff member known for his close relationships with both Dirk Nowitzki and Doncic. What made this firing particularly cold-blooded is the timing. Smith was out of state caring for his gravely ill mother during this heart-wrenching period.

While Smith was in Ohio, Harrison opted for a phone call to deliver the devastating news, a choice viewed as both insensitive and abrupt. Smith had dedicated nearly two decades to the Mavericks, rising from head athletic trainer in 2004 to director of health and performance.

Nowitzki, regarded as the greatest Maverick of all time, has expressed deep appreciation for Smith’s role in his illustrious 21-year career, even calling him one of his closest friends. Following the shocking dismissal, the basketball legend has distanced himself from the team, attending only two games since the event: Doncic's debut as a Laker and his return to Dallas.

Historically, Nowitzki could be found at practices, contributing his insights, but post-firing, he has opted to disengage from the team's operations entirely. "Over the past year, you could see the team heading in a different direction,” Nowitzki stated in a recent podcast appearance. “Now we’re seeing the result of that."

The situation becomes even more intricate with Doncic, who many believed would eventually surpass Nowitzki in Mavs history. He too had a special connection with Smith, making the firing even more contentious.

Harrison tried to justify Smith’s termination by labeling him as 'too negative.' However, insiders felt this was a clear indication that Harrison wanted more of a 'yes-man' in that role. Sources told ESPN that Harrison felt threatened by Smith, asserting his desire to maintain control within the franchise.

Frustrations regarding Doncic's conditioning reportedly influenced Harrison's decision to trade him, viewing Smith as an 'enabler' to the star's attitude. In a dismissive comment, Harrison remarked that talking about Smith was almost a joke, insisting the team had succeeded even without him.

Today, Smith has found a new home with the New York Knicks, serving as vice president of sports medicine and reuniting with former Maverick Jalen Brunson, while the Mavericks saga continues to unfold, leaving fans to wonder about the future of this storied franchise.
