IVINS, Utah — Excitement was palpable on the second day of the PGA Tour's Black Desert Championship in Ivins, marking a significant moment for golf enthusiasts. It’s the first time in 61 years that golf’s elite have showcased their skills in Utah, offering a thrilling experience for both local attendees and visitors from afar.

For many Utah residents, this event symbolizes a long-awaited opportunity to see top pros compete in the Beehive State, while tourists are drawn by the breathtaking landscape of red rock country, known for its stunning vistas and picturesque backdrops.

Among the visitors was Steve Schaffer from Arizona, who chose this unique setting for his bachelor party, bringing along his father, Jeff. "My fiancé likes to play, but definitely not as much as I do," Steve remarked. He expressed his excitement about the event, saying, "We get to watch golf, play golf, and spend some time with great friends." His father added, “It’s hard to focus on the golf when the scenery is so captivating.”

Local artist Tommy Stirland was among those soaking in the atmosphere, joined by his son, Harvey. “It’s pretty neat to have a PGA event here in my hometown,” Stirland said, marveling at the mixture of black and red rock formations surrounding the golf course. Stirland was also commissioned to create a special painting to honor St. George native Jay Don Blake, who made his 500th PGA Tour appearance at this event. Although Blake did not make the cut for the final rounds, his presence was a significant highlight for local fans. "He’s a local legend," Stirland remarked proudly.

Teigen Jewkes, a golf fan from the small town of Elmo, couldn’t contain his excitement either. With a mere population of 418, witnessing a PGA event felt surreal to him. "It's just different, like the ball flights and the way they control the ball. It’s a unique experience," he shared.

As Steve moved around the venue, he couldn’t resist sending a playful message to his fiancé: “Can’t wait to marry you next month!” he shouted, capturing the perfect blend of celebration, camaraderie, and the spirit of golf.

This championship not only brings golf to the forefront in a region less known for the sport but also highlights Ivins and its surrounding areas as a budding destination for both locals and tourists alike. The event promises to leave a lasting impact on the community and foster a deeper appreciation for the game. As the weekend unfolds, anticipation builds for the thrilling performances still to come at this historic championship.
