In a shocking turn of events, former 'Tonight Show' host Jay Leno, now 74 years old, has found himself in the headlines again after a frightening accident left him 'black and blue.' While heading out for dinner over the weekend near Pittsburgh, Leno took a fall down a steep 60-foot hill, leading to considerable injuries on the left side of his face.
On Monday night, just hours after the incident, Leno made an appearance in Beverly Hills, sporting a patch over his swollen left eye and several visible bruises. During an interview with 'Inside Edition,' he recounted the dramatic fall that left him with a broken wrist and a lost fingernail. 'I'm all black and blue all over the left side of my body,' he revealed, lifting his eye patch to show the gruesome extent of his injuries.
The ordeal began when Leno was staying at a Hampton Inn about 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. With no car at his disposal, he was directed by hotel staff to walk a mile and a half to a local restaurant before his performance. Instead of taking the recommended route, Leno opted for a shortcut down a hill, thinking it didn't look too steep. 'I thought, ‘Let me see if I can get down there’… and then I fell down, boom, boom, boom,' he recounted to TMZ.
Despite the fall and the injuries he sustained — such as hitting sharp rocks — Leno showcased his trademark resilience by performing just three hours later. He opted to seek medical treatment only once he returned home to Los Angeles.
This latest incident marks yet another chapter in a string of unfortunate events for the comedian. Just two years ago, Leno faced serious injuries from a fire in his garage that burned his face and body, resulting in extensive treatment at the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles. Shortly after recovering from those grievous burns, he suffered a motorbike accident that led to a broken collarbone, two cracked ribs, and damaged kneecaps.
When asked by TMZ how he feels about his streak of misfortune, Leno humorously replied, 'The great thing about this age is that you don’t learn by your mistakes – you just keep doing the same stupid things.'
Despite the pain he's currently enduring, Leno is not letting it hold him back. He is scheduled to perform on Wednesday evening at a charity event for the very burns hospital that treated him last year. The indomitable spirit of this beloved comedian continues to shine, even in the face of adversity!
