Joshua Williams Praises Spagnuolo's Dynamic Coaching Approach

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for the upcoming playoff rounds, the spotlight is not just on the players but also on the coaching staff, particularly defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. This week, both the New York Jets and the Las Vegas Raiders have shown interest in interviewing Spagnuolo for their vacant head coaching positions, with the Jacksonville Jaguars joining the mix shortly after.

On a recent episode of the Up and Adams Show on FANDUEL TV, Chiefs cornerback Joshua Williams shed light on why Spagnuolo has become such a highly sought-after coach in the NFL. “Every morning, Spags has new stuff,” Williams revealed, emphasizing Spagnuolo's innovative strategies. "He would be a great general—no funny stuff—he is really just a wonder. He comes up with all these different types of pressures and various zone drops designed to confuse the quarterback."

Unlike more static defensive schemes, Spagnuolo's approach relies on versatility and creativity. "We have corners who blitz, play half coverage, man-to-man, and various zone defenses all in one game,” Williams noted. “This diversity is one of the reasons we’re successful.

A key moment illustrating Spagnuolo's impact occurred during the Chiefs’ dramatic Week 16 victory over the Houston Texans. When the Texans were down by eight points and facing a pivotal third-and-11, Williams executed a perfectly timed blitz, sacking quarterback CJ Stroud for a critical 12 yards. “That moment changed the game for us,” Williams recalled, acknowledging Spagnuolo’s genius in calling the right play at the right time.

Williams also praised safety Justin Reid, calling him a crucial figure in the defensive unit. He described Reid as not just a player but a tactical mind who helps guide the younger players. "He's like a second coach on the defense,” Williams said. “His ability to connect with the younger guys while elevating their performance is invaluable."

Looking forward to the playoffs, Williams reflected on one of his standout moments from the previous season. During the 2022 AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he stepped up when starting cornerback L’Jarius Sneed went down with a concussion. Williams, alongside fellow rookies Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, played a crucial role in a thrilling 23-20 victory that sent the Chiefs to the Super Bowl.

“It was cold out, and I knew I would have to play a significant role,” he recalled. “And throughout that game, despite the pressure, we performed at our best as a unit. We had key turnovers and made plays that mattered.”
