Jussie Smollett Reveals $3 Million Spent on Legal Battles: “I Refuse to Accept a Felony for Something I Didn’t Do!”

2024-10-06

Jussie Smollett is breaking his silence once again regarding the high-profile legal case that has haunted him since he reported a racist and homophobic attack in 2019, which authorities claim he orchestrated. The former “Empire” star, who recently made his return to the screen in a self-directed film titled “The Lost Holliday,” is battling a 2021 conviction for disorderly conduct as he seeks to clear his name.

In a poignant interview with Entertainment Tonight aimed at promoting his new film, Smollett maintained his innocence and explained why he continues to fight a lengthy legal battle. “I want to have all of these things in my life, and I don’t want to have a felony on my record for something I didn’t do,” he declared. Smollett emphasized the financial and emotional toll of his legal situation, stating, “I wouldn’t have spent almost $3 million of my own money if I were guilty.”

Initially, charges against him were dropped shortly after his arrest in 2019. However, legal complexities led to the re-filing of charges, culminating in his conviction on five felony counts in 2021. Smollett's case is currently under review by the Illinois Supreme Court as he pursues an appeal.

In an emotional reflection, Smollett noted, “As a human being and as a man, as a Black man and as an openly gay Black man, I have a problem with letting them win.” He emphasized the personal impact of the situation, revealing regrets about how he has navigated the narrative, particularly pointing to a controversial appearance on "Good Morning America." “I wish I hadn’t done the interview,” he admitted. “I never wanted to. I was mortified.”

Smollett has faced considerable backlash over the years, and he feels devastated by the public perception that he is lying. He described the struggle as paradoxical—acknowledging his past mistakes while adamantly denying the allegations against him. “I’m okay with accepting responsibility for things I’ve actually done. I’m just not okay with accepting responsibility for things that I did not do,” he asserted.

Amidst the turmoil, Smollett also discussed another turning point in his life: his admission to rehab for substance abuse last year, something he had long desired but felt he was discouraged from pursuing.

Despite the relentless challenges, he remains steadfast. “I’ve stood by, not my truth but the truth for the entire time, almost six years. I haven’t switched my story up. I stand by every single thing I’ve ever said,” Smollett insisted while reflecting on how various individuals involved in the case have changed their narratives over time.

As the saga continues, Smollett’s commitment to pursuing justice reveals his determination to confront the allegations head-on and restore his reputation in the public eye. With millions spent and countless hours dedicated, his fight against these claims underscores a broader conversation about race, identity, and accountability in modern society. Stay tuned as this case unfolds—will Jussie Smollett finally clear his name?
