Justin Herbert Prepares for Chiefs Showdown

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is pushing through pain as he prepares for a crucial matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday, following a scare from a high right ankle sprain sustained during last week’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite leaving the field limping, Herbert remains optimistic about his ability to play.

“I’m doing everything I can to get back out there,” Herbert said on Wednesday. His status remains uncertain, but he is determined to make a comeback. “It's still early. As long as we're making progress with treatments and training, that's all I can focus on right now.”

Herbert’s positivity stems from his recent practice participation. After being a limited participant on Wednesday, he took part in 7-on-7 drills and reported that his ankle felt significantly better than the previous week when he missed practice. “I feel better than I did last Wednesday,” he stated, emphasizing progress in his recovery.

The quarterback’s injury occurred during the third quarter of the Chargers' 20-10 defeat to the Steelers when he was sacked by outside linebacker Elandon Roberts. Following the hit, he noticeably limped off the field, where trainers examined his ankle before he left the stadium in a walking boot. Thankfully, Herbert was able to remove the boot by Tuesday, which his fans are thankful for as they look forward to his playmaking abilities this weekend.

He acknowledged the potential for sitting out due to the Chargers’ upcoming bye week, but remains determined to play. “We’ve talked about it, but I don’t think we’re heading in that direction,” he explained, showing his insistence on being on the field for the divisional clash against Kansas City.

However, if Herbert does take the field, he may be without his top offensive linemen, Rashawn Slater, who is dealing with a pectoral injury, as well as Joe Alt, who has a sprained MCL. Both tackles were absent from practice on Wednesday, raising concerns about Herbert’s protection.

Despite this, Herbert exudes confidence in the backup offensive linemen. “I believe in our guys. Worrying won’t help; I’m taking it day by day,” he said regarding his recovery and the state of the team’s offensive line. He balances caution with optimism, asserting that only time will tell if he will suit up or if caution will prevail.

As the Chargers gear up to face their long-time rivals, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will Herbert’s perseverance lead him to a triumphant return, or will the limitations of the offensive line hinder their chances? Fans are on the edge of their seats as they anticipate what will unfold in this pivotal game.
