Kellie Harper Takes the Helm as Missouri Women's Basketball Coach: Exciting New Chapter Begins!

In a thrilling development for Missouri women's basketball, Kellie Harper has officially been appointed as the new head coach, as announced by the university on Tuesday. Harper, who previously enjoyed a successful coaching stint at Missouri State, is set to return to the Show-Me State after an impressive career coaching the Lady Vols at Tennessee.

Previously, Harper guided Missouri State from 2013 to 2019, where she led the Bears to a remarkable Sweet 16 appearance in 2019. Her success at Missouri State paved the way for her to take the reins at Tennessee, where she amassed a stellar record of 108-52 over five seasons. Despite making the NCAA Sweet 16 twice during her tenure, Harper parted ways with Tennessee following a 20-13 season, including a second-round exit in the NCAA tournament against eventual Final Four team NC State.

Expressing her excitement about returning to Missouri, Harper stated, "Missouri is a special place, and I know firsthand the passion and pride that surrounds this program. Our family is thrilled to be back in the state of Missouri. I look forward to collaborating with the leadership and student-athletes, nurturing strong community relationships, and striving for championships in Columbia. The foundation for success is already laid, and I can't wait to hit the ground running."

Missouri's athletic director Laird Veatch praised Harper's extensive coaching experience and deep-rooted connections in the state, deeming her a perfect fit for the position. "Kellie is a proven winner and a dynamic leader who embodies the 'Will to Win' necessary for success at the highest level of the sport. Her national respect, experience in the SEC, and ability to recruit and develop championship-caliber players make her the ideal leader for our program,” Veatch declared.

At 47 years old, Harper’s rich coaching background includes head coaching roles at Western Carolina (2004-2009) and NC State (2009-2013). Over her extensive 20-season career in Division I coaching, she has amassed a record of 393-260, boasting a solid .602 winning percentage and nine NCAA tournament appearances. This past season, Harper served as an analyst for the SEC Network, further enhancing her understanding of the game.

Harper takes over from Robin Pingeton, who stepped down after 15 seasons with the Tigers. Under Pingeton's leadership, Missouri recorded an overall mark of 250-218, including four NCAA tournament appearances from 2016 to 2019, during which she coached standout players like Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham, now a seasoned WNBA veteran, has joined the Indiana Fever this season.

As fans eagerly await the impact Kellie Harper will have on the Missouri program, one thing is certain: an exciting new era in women’s basketball is about to unfold! Stay tuned for more updates on how Harper’s coaching strategies will shape the future of the Tigers!
