Kneecap Faces Backlash After Coachella Set

The renowned West Belfast rap group, Kneecap, has swiftly responded to calls for the revocation of their U.S. visas following their provocative performance at Coachella. Ending their set with strong pro-Palestinian statements, the trio stirred significant controversy.

TV personality and music manager Sharon Osbourne criticized the band, claiming they took their performance to an extreme by incorporating what she deemed 'aggressive political statements.' In an audacious reply to BBC News NI, Kneecap rebutted Osbourne’s claims, stating, "Statements aren't aggressive, murdering 20,000 children is though."

A Polarizing Message on a Global Stage

Kneecap has made it a point to advocate for the Palestinian people through their music and live performances. Following the shocking events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, the conflict escalated sharply, leading to heavy casualties on both sides, with civilians predominantly affected.

The band's recent remarks echo the dire humanitarian situation, which has been subject to intense media scrutiny. According to information from Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, massive military offensives have resulted in a staggering number of Palestinian casualties.

U.S. State Department Weighs In

As the controversy rages, the U.S. State Department stated that when considering visa revocations, they evaluate factors that might indicate a threat to public safety or potential ineligibility under U.S. immigration laws. Kneecap is set to continue their North American tour, raising further questions about their future.

Osbourne's Strong Condemnation

Osbourne's outrage includes allegations that Kneecap supports terrorist organizations and criticized the festival's organizers, Goldenvoice, for not adequately vetting the band's political motives before booking them. She expressed deep concerns about the band’s participation in a festival of such high profile and urged others in the industry to call for visa revocation.

An Unfiltered Performance

During their second Coachella set, not broadcast on official channels, Kneecap projected messages that read, "Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people" and concluded with a bold, "[Expletive] Israel. Free Palestine." In addition to these messages, they engaged the crowd in chants demanding freedom for Palestine.

Kneecap's first Coachella performance also drew fire for leading chants against Margaret Thatcher and advocating for a united Ireland, indicating their willingness to address contentious issues through their art.
