Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is gearing up for the 2025 season with a bold statement: he plans to enhance his running game to elevate the team's performance.
After battling through the repercussions of a torn ACL in 2022, Murray feels ready to unleash his full potential on the field. In a recent interview with PHNX Sports, he confessed that lingering issues with his knee impacted his mobility last year, forcing him to limit his trademark scrambles.
Last season, he ran a total of 78 times for 572 yards, but he’s convinced he can do even better. Murray highlighted that his ability to run is a powerful offensive weapon that can dramatically change game outcomes.
"I don’t want to get too scheme-based, but I do feel like I have to run more next year," Murray stated, recognizing the advantages his legs bring to the game. By drawing parallels with elite quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen, he emphasized how crucial mobility can be in confusing defenses and creating opportunities.
Murray believes that making plays outside the pocket is essential for the Cardinals' success. "When plays break down, we need to be better there. . . That's where a lot of money’s made; in scramble drills, making teams pay when plays collapse. I think we didn't capitalize on that last season, but I know we can with my abilities."
While the Cardinals showed some progress in 2024, finishing with a disappointing 2-5 record in the final stretch left them without a playoff spot yet again. Murray’s commitment to enhancing his running game could be the game-changer needed to break the postseason drought that has plagued the franchise for years.
