FLORHAM PARK, N.J.

In a bold move just two days after his appointment, New York Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich has fundamentally altered the coaching landscape, removing Nathaniel Hackett from his position as offensive coordinator. This strategic decision comes as the Jets face mounting pressure following a disappointing start to the season.

Hackett, who has close ties with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, notably played a pivotal role in Rodgers' decision to join the Jets last year. His immediate removal raises eyebrows, not least because of the deeper implications this may hold for the team’s chemistry and performance.

Stepping into the playcalling role is Todd Downing, the Jets' current quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. With experience as an offensive coordinator for both the Tennessee Titans and the Oakland Raiders, Downing is now expected to lead the offense with "full say on the game plan," according to Ulbrich.

“This is about bringing a fresh perspective to our offense,” Ulbrich explained. “It’s not an indictment of anyone; we simply need a different approach moving forward.”

Despite his demotion, Hackett will remain with the team in an unspecified capacity, but his influence on playcalling has been significantly curtailed. Ulbrich is keen to blend his defensive strategies with the offensive game plan, hoping to infuse his unique style into the Jets' attack.

A crucial factor in this transition is the relationship Ulbrich has with Rodgers. Following a discussion with the four-time MVP about the coaching changes, Ulbrich confirmed that Rodgers expressed support for the decision, understanding the need for immediate action to revitalize a stagnant offense.

The timing of this shake-up is particularly significant, as the Jets prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Buffalo Bills. With the Jets currently holding a 2-3 record, a win could bring them level on points with the division leaders in the AFC East.

Previously, Hackett was tasked with revitalizing a Jets offense that has consistently underperformed. Over his tenure of 22 games, the Jets ranked near the bottom in several categories, including points per game and total offensive yards. This lack of production was stark even before Rodgers' season was derailed by injury after just a few plays.

Rodgers has indicated that there needs to be a shift in the offensive scheme, expressing during his latest appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" that he is “on board” with the changes being implemented. This endorsement may prove vital for fostering a collaborative environment as the team moves forward.

For Downing, who is considered a strategist known for facilitating powerful run games—most notably during his time with the Titans and star running back Derrick Henry—the challenge ahead is to develop an aggressive and productive identity for the Jets. The team has struggled with a lack of scoring, managing merely two touchdowns in the last two games, highlighting a critical need for assertiveness and confidence.

“There’s a sense of urgency,” Ulbrich stated. “It’s time to demand more from ourselves. We can’t play timidly; we have to dictate the tempo and take control of our games. I believe we will see that change starting Monday night.”

As the Jets embark on this new chapter against the Bills, the spotlight will be on Downing to ignite the dormant potential of the Jets' offense and possibly set the tone for the rest of the season. Will this change be the spark the struggling Jets need? Fans won't have to wait long to find out.
