In a surprising turn of events, rocker Marilyn Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, has decided to drop his defamation lawsuit against ex-fiancée and 'Westworld' star Evan Rachel Wood. This announcement was made on Tuesday, marking the end of a legal battle that extended over 18 months.
The lawsuit, initiated in 2022, centered around allegations made by Wood regarding instances of sexual and physical abuse during their relationship. Manson accused Wood of fabricating these claims and allegedly encouraging other women to do the same. However, much of the suit was dismissed by a Los Angeles County judge last year, leading Manson to appeal the decision until recently.
Manson's attorney, Howard King, expressed that Manson is relieved to bring closure to this chapter of his life. 'After four years of fighting a battle where he was able to tell the truth, Brian is pleased to dismiss his still-pending claims and appeal,' King stated.
However, Wood’s legal team painted a different picture, claiming Manson's lawsuit was a 'publicity stunt' aimed at discrediting his accusers and reviving his troubled career. Wood’s attorney, Michael J. Kump, firmly stated, 'But his attempt to silence and intimidate Ms. Wood failed.' As part of the settlement, Manson is required to cover nearly $327,000 in attorney fees for Wood.
Interestingly, this legal conclusion arrives amid an ongoing criminal investigation involving Manson that has yet to be resolved. As clarified by outgoing LA County District Attorney George Gascón, new evidence was uncovered in October that may shift the direction of the case involving Manson and multiple unnamed women, including actress Esme Bianco, who has publicly accused Manson of abuse in the past.
The drama surrounding Manson and Wood was ignited by Wood's powerful testimony during the #MeToo movement, where she publicly came forward in 2017 to share her experiences of abuse; however, she did not name her abuser then. This changed in February 2020, when Wood took to social media, stating, 'I have been horrifically abused by Marilyn Manson for years.'
Their relationship spanned from 2007 to 2010, which was marked by an engagement but ultimately ended in breakup. In his original lawsuit, Manson alleged that Wood, along with another woman named Ashley Gore (also known as Illma Gore), defamed him and intentionally caused distress, claiming they conspired to derail his career, even going so far as to use a fake FBI letter.
Although the judge dismissed claims related to this fictitious letter, parts of Manson's lawsuit were still in play, particularly accusations surrounding illegal hacking and other deceptive practices allegedly carried out by Gore.
As this high-profile case reaches its closure, many questions remain about the future for Manson, especially with the persistent cloud of unresolved criminal investigations overshadowing him. Stay tuned for developments as new evidence comes to light. What could this mean for Manson's already shaky career? And are more revelations about his past on the horizon? The public watches eagerly!
