Vito's Historic Win at the National Dog Show
In an unprecedented moment for dog lovers everywhere, Vito, a charming young pug, has made history as the first of his breed to win Best in Show at the prestigious National Dog Show. As he basked in the applause of a captivated audience, the moment was nothing short of magical.
Handler's Pride
“He’s very smug—I do think he knows,” exclaimed Michael Scott, Vito’s proud handler, in a live interview with NBC’s Mary Carillo following the exhilarating competition. Vito triumphed over close to 2,000 dogs from more than 200 breeds, solidifying his place in canine history. The competition, held in Oaks, Pennsylvania, northwest of Philadelphia, aired on NBC right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, thrilling viewers and fans alike.
What Makes Vito Special?
So, what sets Vito apart? According to Mr. Scott, it’s his “beautiful head and expression,” coupled with a compact body and remarkable movement that caught the judges’ eyes. Vito, who is only two years old, belongs to Carolyn Koch from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Not only did she celebrate her pup’s victory with a hefty cash prize, but she also earned some serious bragging rights for future dog park encounters!
Vito's Journey to Victory
Before clinching the coveted Best in Show accolade, Vito first excelled in the toy group, which the American Kennel Club defines as 'short on size but definitely not short on personality.' This victory is just the latest chapter in Vito's blossoming career; he previously earned Best of Breed at both the American Kennel Club National Show and the illustrious Westminster Dog Show earlier this year, competing under the name GCHG CH Andi in Cahoots. Impressively, Mr. Scott is no stranger to success either—he previously guided a Pointer named Holly to victory at the National Dog Show in 2008.
The Best in Show Performance
During the thrilling Best in Show segment, Vito confidently strutted across the iconic blue carpet, displaying his poise and charm, seemingly unfazed by the bright lights or the cheering crowds. Judge George Milutinovich, who had the honor of selecting Vito as the standout competitor, remarked that “Vito is everything a pug should be.” He further added, “Lots of dog in a small package. To look at a pug is to put a smile on your face.”
Fierce Competition
In a fierce competition, Vito surpassed remarkable contenders, including a Welsh terrier named Verde, a clumber spaniel named Houston, a giant schnauzer named Monty, an Ibizan hound named Zit, a Berger Picard named Rupert, and a Lhasa Apso named J.J. Verde took home the reserve Best in Show title.
National Dog Show's Legacy
The National Dog Show has been an institution since 1879, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and witnessed by millions, thanks to its TV debut in 2002, inspired by the cult hit movie 'Best in Show.' Each year, around 30,000 dogs vie for canine glory, with the event attracting approximately 20 million viewers. Vito's stunning win not only marks a significant milestone for pugs but also reignites the passion for dog shows among fans everywhere!
A New Era for Pugs?
Could Vito be the beginning of a pug renaissance in dog shows? Only time will tell!
