Mel Gibson’s Malibu Home Reduced to Ashes
In a heart-wrenching revelation, actor Mel Gibson has disclosed that his Malibu residence was consumed by the destructive wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles, all while he was in Austin, Texas, recording a podcast episode with Joe Rogan.
During a candid phone interview with NewsNation's Elizabeth Vargas, Gibson described the emotional toll of losing his home—a sanctuary he had occupied for over a decade. "Obviously, it’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional," he shared. Reflecting on his possessions, he joked, “You remember George Carlin talking about your stuff? I had my stuff there, and it’s all in cinders now, but I’ve been relieved from the burden of it.”
Recording the Podcast Amidst the Wildfire
While filming the podcast, the actor admitted feeling unsettled. "I was doing the Rogan podcast… And I was kind of ill at ease while we were talking, because I knew my neighborhood was on fire. I thought, I wonder if my place is still there. But when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there." He lightened the mood, adding, “Well, at least I haven’t got any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore.”
Safety of Family and Animals
Gibson expressed his relief that his wife, Rosalind Ross, and their son, Lars, were safely evacuated prior to the blaze consuming their home. However, the devastation extended beyond his property—fellow actor Ed Harris's house down the street was also lost to the flames. In a stroke of good fortune, Gibson noted that his chickens survived the catastrophe.
Personal Losses and Optimism
When pressed for more details about what he lost, the "Braveheart" star reflected on the personal items that were destroyed. "I had a lot of personal things there that I can’t get back… Everything from photographs to files, and clothing—pretty cool stuff, you know, but you know that can all be replaced," he explained. Despite the losses, Gibson remained optimistic, emphasizing, “The good news is that everyone in my family is safe, and we’re all happy and healthy, away from harm's way—that's all I can care about, really.”
Wildfires in California
This fire serves as a reminder of the increasing frequency and destructiveness of wildfires in California, a pattern exacerbated by climate change. Residents and firefighters alike face grave challenges as they combat these raging infernos threatening communities and wildlife. Gibson's experience adds to the grim toll of nature's wrath, highlighting the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
