Defending champions, the Hong Kong China men's team, will take on rivals Japan and China, while the women’s side will face Thailand and Kazakhstan. This competitive matchup comes in the wake of the inaugural Melrose Claymores held in 2024, where Hong Kong's teams showcased their talent and determination.

The Melrose Claymores was initiated to honor the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens' long-standing commitment to fostering rugby development in Asia since its establishment in 1976. In the debut event, the Chinese women and Hong Kong China men emerged triumphantly, with the women even securing promotion to the prestigious HSBC SVNS Series. The men’s final saw an exhilarating contest, where Hong Kong triumphed over Japan in front of a roaring crowd, clinching victory with a score of 22-12.

Despite the thrilling competition, this massive event is not without its challenges. The Hong Kong China men faced intense moments as they narrowly edged past China (19-17) but fell to Japan in a hard-fought match. The women had similar struggles, losing to China in a rematch that underscored the fierce rivalry.

As both teams prepare for the upcoming sevens season, Coach Paul John expresses optimism despite the demanding schedule. With the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger kicking off just before the Hong Kong Sevens, Coach John is excited about the squads' readiness and depth. “It’s going to be a grueling few weeks with tournaments lined up, but our expanded rosters are a blessing,” he noted. “The competition for positions is fierce, which is a testament to our growth in the sport.”

In addition to the Melrose Claymores, players will also have the opportunity to compete in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, with its first rounds slated for Cape Town and the finals in Krakow, Poland. “However, the Hong Kong Sevens holds a special place for everyone involved,” John added, reflecting on the vibrant atmosphere that accompanies the event.
