Microsoft Halts Windows 11 24H2 Upgrades on Some Intel PCs Due to BSOD Problems

2024-10-02

Temporary Block on Upgrades

In a move to protect users from significant system instability, Microsoft has announced a temporary block on Windows 11 24H2 upgrades for certain Intel-powered PCs. The cause? Compatibility issues with the Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) audio drivers, which have been linked to troublesome Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors.

Understanding Intel SST and Affected Devices

Intel SST serves as an integral component within devices featuring Intel Core and Intel Atom processors, operating as a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) for a variety of audio functions, including sound playback and voice interaction. The issue primarily affects devices equipped with Intel's 11th Gen Core processors that feature the Intel SST file named 'IntcAudioBus.sys', specifically versions 10.29.0.5152 and 10.30.0.5152.

Microsoft's Advisory

Microsoft has updated its Windows health dashboard to alert users to this issue, stating, "Only devices with both an Intel 11th Gen Core processor and an Intel SST driver version of 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152 are affected." Furthermore, a compatibility hold has been enacted to prevent the deployment of the Windows 11 2024 Update on systems with these problematic drivers, tagged under safeguard ID 51876952.

Guidance for Affected Users

For users currently facing these challenges, Microsoft strongly advises against attempting to manually upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 using tools such as the Media Creation Tool or the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Doing so could exacerbate problems, resulting in system crashes and BSOD errors.

Available Workaround

However, there is a workaround for the impacted users. They can update their Intel SST drivers to versions 10.30.00.5714 and later, or 10.29.00.5714 and later, which are available via Windows Update. If they struggle to locate an appropriate updated driver, Microsoft urges them to reach out to their device manufacturer (OEM) for guidance. It’s important to note that later driver versions may not clearly indicate they are newer, as Microsoft has warned that references to version numbers can be misleading.

Update Timeline

Moreover, impacted users should be aware that if there aren't any other compatibility holds affecting their device, it could take up to 48 hours for them to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 after they have updated their drivers.

Other Compatibility Holds

In addition to the Intel SST issues, other identified compatibility holds currently block the upgrade path for those running the game Asphalt 8 (Airborne) and users of the Easy Anti-Cheat application. As always, for those eager to stay on the cutting edge of updates, keeping drivers and software current can significantly streamline the upgrade process and enhance overall device performance. Stay tuned for further updates as Microsoft continues to navigate these compatibility waters.
