After only six days of its global release, Disney’s much-anticipated sequel, Moana 2, has already raked in an astonishing $404.5 million worldwide.

The animated film has outperformed other major contenders in 2023, surpassing the previous box office leaders like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at $397.4 million and Bad Boys: Ride or Die with $404.5 million, making it the 9th highest-grossing film of the year so far.

In its latest domestic performance, Moana 2 topped the charts with $5.7 million, despite an 83% drop from its Sunday earnings, bringing its total to a remarkable $231.2 million.

Not far behind, Universal's Wicked grossed $5.5 million, contributing to an impressive cumulative total of $268.8 million.

On the international front, Moana 2 attracted $9.5 million on Monday alone, with its foreign total climbing to $173.3 million.

Comparatively, the original Moana film, released in 2016, concluded its theatrical run with a global tally of $643.3 million—$248.7 million of which came from domestic earnings—and $394.5 million from international markets.

Analysts expect the sequel to easily surpass these figures.

In terms of market breakdown, the film has shown robust performance in various countries: France ($19.2 million), the UK ($16.3 million), Mexico ($12.4 million), Germany ($10.6 million), and several others have all contributed significantly to its total.

Data from PostTrak reveals that Moana 2's audience is primarily made up of families, with 67% consisting of adults and children.

Remarkably, 42% of viewers chose to watch the film in 3D format, indicating strong interest in the visual experience.

Notably, a whopping 60% of tickets were sold on the same day of viewing, attesting to the movie’s appeal and effective marketing.

Among the audience, 38% cited their motivation as being fans of the Disney franchise, while an impressive 53% identified themselves as die-hard fans of the series.

Looking ahead, the upcoming weekend will see the release of two new films vying for box office dominance: A24’s horror flick Y2K featuring Rachel Zegler, and Briarcliff Entertainment’s Werewolves starring Frank Grillo.
