In a significant development, the NFL has concluded its investigation into the sexual assault allegations against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, following claims made in September 2023. A spokesperson for the league confirmed to ESPN that the inquiry found insufficient evidence to warrant any violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

This latest investigation accelerated shortly after a new lawsuit was filed just a day following the Browns' season opener, accusing Watson of sexual assault and battery. However, a resolution was reached in October, as revealed by attorney Tony Buzbee, who represented the plaintiff. The lawsuit, filed on September 9th in Harris County, Texas, stemmed from events that purportedly took place in October 2020, involving Watson and a woman referred to as "Jane Doe" in court documents. At the time, Watson was playing for the Houston Texans. The allegations continue to cloud Watson's career, despite his adamant denial of wrongdoing through his attorney, Rusty Hardin.

Although the NFL reviewed the ongoing complaint under its personal conduct policy, Watson was not placed on the commissioner’s exempt list since no formal charges had been brought against him, and the investigation was classified as preliminary.

A Pattern of Allegations

This is not the first instance of legal trouble for Watson. The 29-year-old quarterback faced serious repercussions last season when he was suspended for 11 games due to a flurry of allegations from over two dozen women claiming sexual assault and harassment during massage sessions. Even though a pair of Texas grand juries did not pursue criminal charges against him, Watson ended up serving the suspension after reaching a disciplinary settlement with the NFL.

As part of the settlement, Watson was fined $5 million and was mandated to complete behavioral evaluations and undergo treatment as recommended before returning to the field. Notably, he settled 23 of the 24 civil lawsuits against him in the summer of 2022, leaving just a couple of cases pending, including the lawsuit that led to this latest investigation.

Watson's tumultuous journey continues this season following a debilitating right Achilles tendon tear he sustained in Week 7, which has now ended his playing season early.
