In an astonishing encounter that has scientists buzzing, a drone captured footage of an octopus riding atop a shortfin mako shark off the coast of New Zealand in December 2023. The University of Auckland's research team was on a mission to observe feeding frenzies when they spotted the shark's distinctive fin, only to be baffled by a bright orange blob perched on its back.
