In a stunning display of speed at the Bahrain Grand Prix's third and final practice session, Oscar Piastri has emerged as the frontrunner, setting the fastest time with an impressive margin of over half a second ahead of his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc took the third spot.
Under the sweltering Sakhir sun, temperatures soared to 33 degrees Celsius as drivers hit the track at 3:30 PM local time for their last chance to tweak their setups ahead of Qualifying.
Calm Beginnings and Quick Adjustments
The session kicked off quietly, with only Ollie Bearman of Haas initially venturing onto the circuit on hard tires. Meanwhile, big names like Norris and Max Verstappen were spotted chatting in the pit lane, presumably strategizing for the challenging conditions.
Bearman and his teammate, Esteban Ocon, were soon joined by the Ferraris, which notably included the soft compound tires. Bearman highlighted the significant grip differences between the day and night sessions, suggesting the tricky conditions from Friday's practice persisted.
McLaren's Piastri Takes the Lead
While most opted for hard or soft tires for their initial runs, Alpine surprisingly went with medium tires. However, it was Piastri who stole the spotlight, clocking in a blistering lap of 1m 33.324s midway through the session, establishing him as a solid contender.
Verstappen faced a setback when he had to abort his flying lap after going wide, returning to the pits for adjustments.
Drama on the Track
The session briefly turned chaotic when Nico Hulkenberg's car suffered an anti-stall issue, prompting yellow flags. Following a brief Virtual Safety Car, action resumed with Verstappen quickly climbing to second despite some struggles on track.
Leclerc encountered his own drama as one of his wing mirrors detached mid-run. Meanwhile, George Russell faced frustrating moments, including a spin at Turn 10 and commented on the unusually low grip levels he was experiencing.
Final Thrills and Standings
As the session wound down, Piastri raised the stakes further with a jaw-dropping lap of 1m 31.646s, leaving Norris trailing 0.668 seconds behind as his closest rival. Leclerc rounded out the top three, becoming the only other driver within a second of Piastri.
George Russell and Kimi Antonelli claimed the fourth and fifth spots, while Pierre Gasly shone in sixth for Alpine. The top ten was completed by Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar, Verstappen, Williams’ Carlos Sainz, and Hamilton.
Looking Ahead to Qualifying
With final practice behind them, teams have valuable insights as they prepare for Qualifying at 7:00 PM local time. The stage is set for what promises to be an exhilarating showdown in Bahrain!
