Patrick Reed Shatters Records with Stunning Third-Round 59 at Hong Kong Open
In a thrilling display of golfing prowess, Patrick Reed made history at the Hong Kong Open by becoming only the second player ever on the Asian Tour to shoot a stunning score of 59. The LIV Golf star showcased exceptional skill on the course during Saturday’s third round, hitting every fairway and green throughout the day.
Facing what could only be described as one of the most challenging pre-round warm-ups of his career, Reed managed to shake off the nerves thanks to encouragement from his caddie. “I looked at my caddie, and he goes, ‘Hey, a warm-up is a warm-up – let’s just go out and play golf,’” Reed recounted after the round. His strategy paid off handsomely; he ended the day an incredible 11 under par on the 70-par Hong Kong Golf Club layout.
Now leading the tournament at an impressive 18 under total, Reed sits three strokes ahead of contenders Rashid Khan and Nitithorn Thippong. The victory would mark Reed's first win on a global stage since the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open, reigniting discussions of his return to top form.
Interestingly, Reed's sub-60 round comes just following John Catlin's similar feat earlier this year in Macau, a round he ironically played alongside Reed. However, due to the specific conditions under which Reed played – being on preferred lies – his round will not be officially recognized by the Asian Tour.
Since the conclusion of the LIV season in mid-September, Reed has been extremely active, participating in two events on the DP World Tour before making his mark during this three-week finale of the Asian Tour.
As golf fans eagerly await the final round, all eyes will be on Reed to see if he can maintain his lead and capture the coveted title in Hong Kong. Will he be able to convert this record-setting round into a much-deserved victory? Stay tuned!
