In a breathtaking display of endurance and strategy, Primož Roglič of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe clinched his second stage victory at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, cementing his place at the top of the general classification during an exhilarating final stage in Barcelona.
With 20 kilometers to go, Roglič ignited the crowd with a bold attack on the challenging Montjuïc climb, managing to maintain his lead all the way to the finish line. Laurens de Plus (Ineos-Grenadiers) finished in a commendable second place, while Lotto’s Lennert van Eetvelt rounded out the podium in third.
The stage began with a fierce contest for bonus seconds across two intermediate sprints, where Roglič and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) swapped the leader’s jersey in a gripping back-and-forth battle. However, Ayuso fell short of matching Roglič’s relentless pace after his decisive attack, ultimately conceding his lead and finishing second overall, 28 seconds behind Roglič. Enric Mas (Movistar) completed the general classification podium, finishing in third place at 53 seconds adrift.
Post-race, a jubilant Roglič expressed his relief and satisfaction: "For me, it was about time, no? I’ve been second here twice before, so it’s nice to finally come out on top. Even though I prefer to settle things in the mountains, today proved pivotal with those bonus seconds. After the second sprint, I knew I had to act if I wanted this win."
He also reflected on the challenges of the race: "I didn't feel fully secure until the very end because it was such a tight competition. Although I anticipated a big mountain stage yesterday, mother nature had other plans, changing everything and placing the focus on today's finale instead. Thankfully, my team was phenomenal throughout the week.”
How It All Unfolded
This year's traditional final stage was a riveting circuit race around the city of Barcelona. Starting with 40 flat kilometers, the race culminated in six laps featuring the arduous Montjuïc ascent, which would decide not only the stage winner but also the overall champion.
As expected, the final stage revolved around the capture of bonus seconds, as teams entered a strategic contest for positioning. Initially, Roglič's team dominated the first intermediate sprint, allowing him to secure crucial seconds and take a one-second lead ahead of Ayuso.
But the battle intensified as UAE Team Emirates-XRG quickly took charge, enabling Ayuso to turn the tables at the second sprint, further complicating the overall race dynamics.
Amidst the chaos, a series of attacks erupted from the frontrunners, culminating in a solo breakaway by Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) before Roglič unleashed his decisive move that left Ayuso and others struggling to keep pace. With 20 kilometers remaining, Ayuso was left isolated in the chase, while Roglič extended his gap against the backdrop of roaring fans.
Despite concerted efforts from Mas and others to close the gap, Roglič’s tenacity proved unyielding. With the clock ticking down and the finish line approaching, Roglič maintained his expansive lead, crossing the line solo and solidifying his reputation as one of the top contenders in cycling today.
Roglič's stunning victory at the Volta a Catalunya is not just a testament to his physical endurance but also a brilliant display of tactical prowess that has cycling fans buzzing globe-wide!
