In a shocking revelation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has expressed its deep outrage over the tragic deaths of eight medics in Rafah, southern Gaza. This humanitarian disaster occurred amidst the escalating violence in the region, drawing international condemnation and raising urgent questions about the safety of medical personnel in conflict zones.

On March 23, a nine-member ambulance team was ambushed while carrying out their life-saving duties in the al-Hashashin area. After a heartbreaking week during which access to the site was impeded, their bodies were finally retrieved on Sunday, with one medic still unaccounted for.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) confirmed that alongside the medics, the bodies of six members from Hamas’s civil defense agency and one United Nations employee were also found. The identity of the attackers has not been conclusively established, but Hamas has accused the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of launching the deadly assault. The IDF has yet to respond publicly to these claims.

The IFRC identified the courageous individuals who lost their lives: ambulance officers Mostafa Khufaga, Saleh Muamer, and Ezzedine Shaath; along with first responder volunteers Mohammad Bahloul, Mohammed al-Heila, Ashraf Abu Labda, Raed al-Sharif, and Rifatt Radwan. It was noted that another ambulance officer, Assad Al-Nassasra, is still unaccounted for, intensifying the sorrow experienced by the community and humanitarian sector.

IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain expressed his heartbreak, stating, "These dedicated ambulance workers were responding to wounded people. They were humanitarians. They wore emblems that should have protected them; their ambulances were clearly marked." Adding to the complexity of the situation, reports from the AFP indicate that on March 18, the Israeli military acknowledged having fired at vehicles in southern Gaza, mistakenly identifying some of them as threats. Initial inquiries revealed that among those targeted were several ambulances and fire trucks, leading to further outrage and condemnation from the international community.

Basem Naim, a senior official from Hamas, condemned the attack on the medics as a "flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions and a war crime," underscoring the critical need for accountability and protection for humanitarian workers in war-torn regions.

Since resuming its military offensive on March 18, following a previous ceasefire confrontation, Israel's actions have resulted in the deaths of over 900 individuals in Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry. The escalated conflict traces its origins back to a brutal attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 individuals to Gaza.
