Richard Gere's Move to Spain

Richard Gere, the iconic actor known for classics like "Pretty Woman" and "American Gigolo," is waving goodbye to his American lifestyle as he prepares to move to Spain with his wife, Alejandra Silva, and their children. The 75-year-old star announced this exciting transition while guesting on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."

During the appearance, Gere humorously remarked about the move, saying, “My wife is Spanish. Is this a problem for anybody out there?” He revealed that his wife has graciously allowed him to enjoy seven years in the U.S. and expressed their anticipation of spending time in Madrid with her family.

“My wife and I have made a great life together, and our kids are bilingual, so they’re going to flourish there,” Gere explained, highlighting the benefits of raising their children in a multicultural environment.

Family and Traditions

As the family gears up for the holiday season, they’re excited to reunite with Silva's large Spanish family. Gere fondly reminisced about Silva’s grandmother, who was the anchor of the family before she passed away two years ago. He noted that Silva is embracing her new role as the matriarch, already planning for sizeable Sunday lunches with about 35 relatives.

The couple’s journey began in 2014 when they met at a hotel in Positano, Italy, and they tied the knot in May 2018. They have two young sons: 5-year-old Alexander and 4-year-old James. Additionally, they each come with children from prior relationships, creating a beautifully blended family. Silva has an 11-year-old son, Albert, with her ex-husband, and Gere shares a 24-year-old son, Homer, with his second wife, Carey Lowell.

Financial Move and Future Plans

In a recent financial move, Gere sold his Connecticut home for $10.7 million, which he had bought for $10.8 million from Grammy-winning singer Paul Simon just the year before.

The actor first hinted at the move back in April during an interview with Vanity Fair Spain, explaining that the decision was made to connect Silva with her roots. "For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture," he shared. “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.”

A Trend Among Celebrities

Interestingly, Gere's relocation mirrors a trend among other celebrities who have sought new beginnings following significant political changes in the U.S. Notably, television host Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi have also reportedly put their house on the market in Montecito, California, and are moving to the U.K.
