In a remarkable blend of personal experience and innovative technology, Vikram Bhaskaran, previously head of creator partnerships at Pinterest, has embarked on a transformative journey inspired by his father's battle with ALS, a terminal neurodegenerative disease. Bhaskaran recalled the chaos as he searched endlessly online for reliable information, only to find himself inundated with confusing and often misleading content. "It turned my world upside down," he shared.

Realizing the urgent need for more reliable health information, Bhaskaran partnered with two friends – Rohan Ramakrishna, a neurosurgeon at Weil Cornell Medicine, and Arun Ranganathan, a fellow Pinterest engineer – to establish Roon, a pioneering online health resource. This platform aims to replace the ineffective "Dr. Google" phenomenon and outdated sites like WebMD and Healthline by providing concise, video-based answers to a wide array of health concerns from credible medical professionals.

Dr. Ramakrishna observed a deficiency in how patient inquiries were handled: repetitive questions during consultations that went unanswered outside the clinical environment. "Doctors hold vast amounts of knowledge that unfortunately never reach beyond their clinics," he noted. Roon seeks to bridge this gap by inviting thousands of doctors to share their expertise through engaging short videos, addressing thousands of conditions, including ALS, glioblastoma, dementia, and PCOS. The platform is also set to expand into topics vital for women’s health, like menopause and breast cancer, and broader areas like pediatrics and neurology.

Roon positions itself as a creator platform for physicians who desire to contribute valuable information to the community without primarily focusing on monetization. Doctors are offered an honorarium for their contributions, although many decline due to conflict of interest concerns. Instead, Bhaskaran emphasizes that the real reward lies in improved patient outcomes, as doctors can utilize these videos as educational tools to help patients prepare for their appointments.

The appeal of Roon’s content lies in its authenticity; patients receive insights from actual doctors alongside testimonies from fellow patients, fostering a supportive community atmosphere.

Despite being in its infancy without a solidified revenue model, Roon has captivated investors, recently raising $15 million at a valuation of $68 million. The funding round was co-led by Forerunner Ventures and First Mark, alongside notable endorsements from Sequoia Capital and TMV. Euire Kim, managing partner at Forerunner, resonated personally with Roon’s mission after caregiving for her mother with cancer. "You don’t have enough time with your doctor to ask all the questions you have," Kim stated, believing that Roon empowers patients to approach appointments with greater knowledge and confidence.

Moving forward, Roon’s monetization strategy might include advertising, subscription services for healthcare providers, or even developing a directory to assist patients in finding doctors and obtaining second opinions. As Kim wisely opines, understanding business models will emerge organically as Roon builds a trust-based community.
