The lawsuit highlights how Discord's lack of robust safety controls makes its users, particularly children, easy prey for predators. Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "We’ve seen child exploitation, grooming, and other unspeakable acts on this platform, and they haven’t done enough to protect our kids. It feels like profits are prioritized over safety!"

Loopholes Allow Strangers to Approach Children Easily

Although Discord’s guidelines state users must be at least 13 years old, the lawsuit points out that creating accounts is alarmingly easy. Kids can easily bypass age restrictions, and adults can masquerade as youths, leading to predatory interactions.

The complaint references multiple criminal cases involving adults in New Jersey who exploited Discord to have explicit conversations with minors and even solicit nude images. One particularly horrifying case involved a 47-year-old man who used the platform to promote self-mutilation streams featuring children, resulting in a 30-year prison sentence.

Discord Responds to the Allegations

In response to the lawsuit, Discord’s spokesperson Jillian Susi defended the company, highlighting their ongoing efforts to enhance user safety through new tools and features. Although Discord introduced safety measures and content filters this year, critics argue that these actions may not go far enough.

Just recently, a California man was charged with kidnapping a 10-year-old who had been communicating with him on Discord, highlighting the urgent need for stricter regulations.
