Pirates Pitching Shake-Up: Mayza Out, Bednar Returns
In a surprising turn of events, the Pittsburgh Pirates have officially placed left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza on the 15-day injured list due to a lat strain in his throwing shoulder. But the real story here? The triumphant return of former closer David Bednar to the active roster!
Bednar, who clinched the closer role for the Pirates during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, was an All-Star in both years, boasting an impressive 2.27 ERA and 2.49 FIP, with a staggering strikeout rate of 30.6%. However, his performance took a nosedive in 2024, plummeting to a disappointing 5.77 ERA. With a strikeout rate that fell to 22.1% and a disconcerting walk rate of 10.7%, Bednar's struggles led to his removal as closer last August.
As speculation swirled about his future with the team—whether he would be traded or released—Bednar remained in Pittsburgh, clawing for redemption in 2025. But his comeback didn’t start great; he allowed four runs (three earned) in his first three appearances this season. As a consequence, he was optioned to the minors after failing to perform.
Yet, while in Triple-A, Bednar rediscovered his form, delivering five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and zero walks. This stellar performance seemingly paved the way for his return to the majors.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton addressed the media regarding Bednar's return, expressing optimism but refraining from detailing his exact role moving forward. "We’re kind of pitching to what we think the leverage is and what we feel the matchup is, but we’re excited to have him back," Shelton shared. He emphasized that having Bednar in the bullpen is a game-changer for the team.
With the Pirates' bullpen ranking roughly average in ERA and FIP, the dynamics are shifting. However, deeper metrics suggest they are struggling, placing them in the bottom ten for relief pitching. Currently, Dennis Santana is the man designated as closer, but given his modest 14.7% strikeout rate and the injury struggles of Colin Holderman, the late innings remain an area of uncertainty for Pittsburgh.
As the Pirates navigate this turbulent season, all eyes will be on Bednar—can he reclaim his former glory and stabilize the bullpen?
