The research team, led by Ph.D. graduate Jordan Garrett, focused on participants aged 18 to 45 and meticulously reviewed thousands of exercise studies published over the last three decades. They found compelling evidence indicating that activities like cycling and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) led to significant improvements in essential cognitive skills such as memory, attention, and executive function.

Giesbrecht pointed out, “Vigorous exercises yielded the largest effects, especially when cognitive tests were conducted after, rather than during, exercise. Interestingly, short sessions of exercise lasting under 30 minutes showed stronger cognitive benefits than longer workouts!” This raises exciting possibilities for maximizing mental clarity and productivity through efficient workout routines.

Among their intriguing discoveries, the researchers noted that executive functioning—the mental process that includes planning, decision-making, and problem-solving—benefited the most from these single bouts of intense exercise.

However, there’s a twist: Giesbrecht cautions that while the positive effects of exercise on cognition were evident, they tended to be small in magnitude. This variability might be because many of the cognitive tasks assessed were disconnected from the physical activities performed. He suggested an innovative idea: combining physical tasks with cognitive challenges during exercise could potentially amplify the benefits even further.

With plans to explore this hypothesis through a mix of laboratory experiments and real-world applications, Giesbrecht and his team are poised to unlock even more insights into the robust relationship between physical activity and cognitive prowess.
