In an electrifying display of cycling spirit, the Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) Hong Kong Cyclothon 2024 concluded on October 13, bringing together around 6,000 registered cyclists for a spectacular celebration of sports. Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), this year’s Cyclothon introduced enhanced cycling routes through Hong Kong's picturesque urban backdrop, making it an unforgettable experience for both locals and tourists.

For the first time ever, the event also incorporated a vibrant "Cyclothon Carnival" at the Wonderland in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), which featured a vast array of fun-filled activities. Participants enjoyed new sports experiences, a marketplace themed around sports, family-friendly art activities, a gourmet food corner, and various entertainment performances, allowing everyone to partake in the festivities, regardless of cycling skills.

Dr. Pang Yiu-kai, Chairman of the HKTB, expressed pride in the event, saying, “The annual SHKP Hong Kong Cyclothon stands as the city's most substantial cycling celebration. Our commitment to promoting sports tourism through major events aims to establish Hong Kong as a premier sports and wellness destination. This year's elevated routes and the introduction of the Cyclothon Carnival significantly enhanced the overall experience, inviting a broader audience to appreciate the city’s dynamic energy.”

Adding to the excitement, Mr. Adam Kwok, Executive Director of SHKP, highlighted the charity aspect of the event. “As the title and charity sponsor for the seventh consecutive year, we are enthusiastic about showcasing Hong Kong's beauty. By adhering to the ethos of 'Sports for Charity', all funds raised will aid The Community Chest of Hong Kong.” Notably, the event featured cycling legend Chris Froome, a four-time Tour de France champion, participating in the 50km ride, making it a landmark occasion for riders.

The day was packed with six thrilling cycling events where participants enjoyed improved routes. The 50km ride included an adventurous journey through four tunnels and three bridges, while the 32km ride offered breathtaking views of Hong Kong's iconic harbor from the Ting Kau Bridge. Highlights included the City Cycling Challenge, where Yip Shing-hei and Wu Wenmin triumphed in the men’s and women’s open categories, respectively.

Moreover, the CEO Charity and Celebrity Ride saw over 20 leaders and celebrities unite to foster a love for cycling, with all registration fees contributing to charitable efforts. The Family Fun Ride was a heartwarming sight, involving around 200 children and their parents sharing the joy of cycling together in the lively Hong Kong scenery.

The inaugural Cyclothon Carnival featured seven interactive zones that invited the public to engage with sports in new and innovative ways. The festive atmosphere was enriched by colorful performances, food stalls, and stunning photography opportunities, making it a perfect day out for families and friends.

As the Cyclothon leaves a lasting impression, it sets the stage for even bigger sporting events ahead in Hong Kong, reminding everyone of the city's unmatched vibrancy and community spirit.
