In a significant policy shift, Taiwan is tightening security measures for applicants from Hong Kong and Macau seeking long-term residency. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chiu Chui-cheng announced that an extended national security observation period will now accompany these applications.

Concerns Over Chinese Influence

This move is a response to increasing worries over China's political maneuvering and demographic manipulation in the region. Speaking during a public event, Chiu emphasized the necessity of revising residency policies in light of the changing political landscape in Hong Kong.

Long-Term Residency: New Guidelines

The updated guidelines allow residents from Hong Kong and Macau to apply for long-term residency—similar to pathways available for foreign nationals—yet they will now face intensified national security checks. Chiu pointedly remarked on China’s systematic efforts to alter Hong Kong's demographic fabric, describing it as a targeted campaign of 'population cleansing.'

A Security Measure Amidst Political Turmoil

The enhanced security evaluations are designed to safeguard Taiwan’s national stability, providing both Hongkongers more options and Taiwanese citizens an added layer of security. This policy aligns with President Lai Ching-te’s recently introduced 17-point national security strategy aimed at countering Beijing's influence.

Work Visas and Long-Term Residency Options

For those from Hong Kong seeking employment in Taiwan, there are alternatives such as personal work visas that facilitate long-term residency without complete settlement. The additional observation period is meant for thorough vetting and continuous monitoring of applicants, particularly in light of unpredictable security threats.

Combatting Persistent Threats from Beijing

Chiu underscored the ever-present risks posed by the Chinese Communist Party, which seeks to infiltrate and disrupt Taiwan. To combat this, the MAC is reinforcing legal protections and ramping up security checks, establishing a more robust democratic defense.

Travel Warnings for Taiwan Citizens

In light of these developments, Chiu also issued a caution to Taiwanese travelers heading to China, Hong Kong, and Macau, highlighting reports of over 80 citizens facing detention or travel restrictions. He advised travelers to register with the MAC before their journeys to ensure their safety.
