HOUSTON – In a dramatic shift to bolster their wide receiver corps, the Houston Texans have claimed veteran receiver Diontae Johnson off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. This move comes as a direct response to the unfortunate season-ending knee injury suffered by rookie standout Tank Dell, who is now facing a long recovery with a dislocated knee and torn ACL.

In a surprising twist of fate, the Ravens received return specialist Steven Sims Jr. from the Texans, effectively making it a straightforward wide receiver swap. Johnson’s integration into the Texans lineup, however, will not occur in their upcoming Christmas matchup against the Ravens at NRG Stadium. Coach DeMeco Ryans has indicated that Johnson will begin practicing next week as the team prepares for the regular-season finale against the Tennessee Titans.

"It’s tough to bring in a new player on a short week, especially with just two days to prepare," Ryans noted. "We trust our current roster and believe in the abilities of our guys to step up. We’re ready to compete."

Johnson’s tenure with the Ravens was tumultuous, characterized by a brief stay of only seven weeks, during which he experienced several personal and professional challenges. Initially acquired from the Carolina Panthers, Johnson faced suspension due to conduct detrimental to the team after he refused to play in a critical game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Subsequently, he was excused from team activities entirely, catching only one pass for six yards over his time with the Ravens.

Dell's absence will undoubtedly be felt, as he was emerging as a key player for the Texans. His injury, compounded by additional damage, has put him on injured reserve alongside veteran defensive back Jimmie Ward, who is set for foot surgery.

Despite the controversies surrounding him, Johnson has had a solid career, amassing impressive stats over several seasons. With 31 receptions for 363 yards and three touchdowns during his time with Carolina this year, Johnson was expected to be a pivotal piece for the Ravens but struggled to find his place. His past exploits include 422 receptions for 4,726 yards and 28 touchdowns throughout his career, primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers originally drafted Johnson in the third round from Toledo, where he showcased great potential. Unfortunately, his time with the team was marred by moments of emotional volatility and criticism for his on-field decisions, including a noted incident where he failed to attempt recovering a fumble last season.

On the flip side, Steven Sims Jr., who returns to Baltimore, offers experience and versatility with 78 career receptions and has also made an impact in special teams. Although he has seen limited action this season, his past playoff performance, including a memorable punt return touchdown, highlights his game-breaking abilities.
