The Challenge Ahead for Pidcock
Tom Pidcock, racing under the Q36.5 banner, has openly acknowledged that he faces significant challenges as he gears up to defend his title at the Amstel Gold Race. After struggling to keep pace during the decisive moments of De Brabantse Pijl, it’s clear that improvements are needed before the big race.
Falling Behind Evenepoel and Pogačar
During last Friday’s one-day race, Pidcock found himself unable to follow the blistering attacks from Remco Evenepoel, who showcased his formidable form. Pidcock was dropped into the chase group, ultimately crossing the finish line in 11th place, far from the podium.
"Honestly, it didn’t surprise me when Evenepoel zipped ahead; I just didn’t have the punch to match his move,” Pidcock reflected. "After a tough run-up to this race, I felt I was struggling. I knew it would be hard, and it was."
A Tough Comeback After Injuries
Coming back from multiple injuries sustained in a crash last December, Pidcock admits he is still regaining his explosiveness. Despite his previous victories with Q36.5, his current form is not yet where he wants it to be.
“I’m happy with my experience in the first race, but I can’t burst onto the scene like Remco. There’s definitely work to do,” he explained.
Team Support and Preparations for Amstel Gold Race
Looking ahead, Pidcock is determined to harness the full potential of his Q36.5 team, which includes strong riders like Nick Zukowsky and Xabier Mikel Azparren. The team’s strategy focuses on supporting Pidcock as he navigates the challenging terrain against top competitors like Tadej Pogačar and Evenepoel.
Teammate Milan Vader expressed confidence in their preparations, stating, "We had a great camp to build synergy among ourselves for these important races. I’m eager to help Tom be in the right position when it counts."
A Positive Outlook Moving Forward
Pidcock remains optimistic as he comes back to sea level after some difficult training at altitude. "I’m feeling good as I approach the Amstel Gold Race. I know my shape has been solid this year. With the team behind me, I’m ready to give it my all," he concluded.
