In a heartbreaking turn of events, the body of a fourth US soldier has been recovered a week after going missing during military exercises in Lithuania. The soldiers were part of a four-member team conducting operations in a large armoured vehicle near Pabrade when communication was lost.

The vehicle, identified as an M88A2 Hercules—one of the largest and most formidable recovery vehicles in the US Army—was retrieved from a peat bog along with the lifeless bodies of the first three soldiers on Monday. This challenging recovery operation required the concerted efforts of hundreds of rescue workers from the US Army, Navy, and the Armed Forces of Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia.

Major General Christopher Norrie of US Army Europe and Africa expressed the profound sorrow felt by the military community, stating, “This past week has been devastating. Today our hearts bear the weight of an unbearable pain... the world is darker without them." Lt General Charles Costanza characterized the incident as a “tragic accident” and commended the collaborative efforts of the international recovery team, emphasizing the strength found in unity during such dark times.

While the precise location of the final soldier’s body was not disclosed, authorities indicated that the operations took place near the border with Belarus. The ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding their disappearance and subsequent recovery remains a priority for the US Army.

The M88A2 Hercules is primarily engineered to recover incapacitated tanks and other vehicles from diverse battlefield terrains, a testament to the tactical challenges faced in the region. The complexity of the recovery operation necessitated the deployment of two additional M88A2 Hercules vehicles and bulldozers, indicating the difficult conditions of the bog where the soldiers and their vehicle were found.

All four soldiers were deployed to Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve—a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering the US military presence in Eastern Europe in response to the ongoing tensions stemming from Russia's aggressive maneuvers in Ukraine.
