In a stark warning delivered on Friday, Richard Moore, the head of the UK’s foreign intelligence service MI6, accused Russia of orchestrating a “staggeringly reckless” campaign of sabotage aimed at Ukraine's western allies. His remarks came at a gathering in Paris and were directed in part toward U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump, indicating that a Russian triumph in Ukraine could pose a severe threat to both American and European security.

Moore emphasized the urgent collaboration between British and French intelligence agencies to mitigate the escalating risks tied to President Vladimir Putin’s aggressive tactics. He described recent intelligence findings that reveal a hostile Russian strategy characterized by attacks and disinformation intended to destabilize Ukraine's supportive nations.

During his address before diplomats and intelligence officials, Moore articulated concerns over a series of incendiary plots attributed to Russian operatives across Europe, noting incidents such as an intended attack on Ukrainian-owned businesses in London and incendiary devices found on cargo planes, with some triggering fires in Germany and England.

His French counterpart, Nicolas Lerner, echoed similar sentiments, asserting that the collective security of Europe hinges on the outcome in Ukraine. Lerner underscored the importance of historical British experiences in countering Russian actions, especially following events such as the high-profile 2018 Novichok poisoning in Salisbury.

The ongoing conflict has also seen France and the UK play pivotal roles in supplying weapons to Ukraine, including advanced missiles like Scalp and Storm Shadow. With the recent easing of the Biden administration's restrictions, Ukraine recently confirmed it has employed American ATACM missiles against targets in Russia, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.

In response to Ukraine’s strengthened military stance, Putin has arguably intensified Russia’s nuclear threat rhetoric, adjusting the conditions for nuclear weapon usage and ramping up missile attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure. Moore cautioned, “The cost of supporting Ukraine is well-known, but the cost of not doing so would be infinitely higher.

As the geopolitical landscape shifts, concerns also loom over Trump's "America first" policy and its implications for transatlantic unity. Moore remains optimistic about the enduring strength of the U.S.-UK intelligence alliance, recalling fruitful collaboration during Trump's previous tenure as president.

By putting the stakes of the Ukraine-Russia conflict into perspective, Moore warned that if Russia is allowed to emerge victorious, it could embolden not just Moscow, but also allies like Iran and North Korea, creating a far more dangerous world scenario. “If Putin is allowed to succeed in reducing Ukraine to a vassal state, he will not stop there,” he cautioned, highlighting the potential ripple effects of a Russian victory on global security.
