Features Excluded from iOS 18.1

Here's a closer look at some exciting features that won't be included in this release and when we can expect their introduction:

Image Playground

This innovative tool will allow users to generate fun cartoon-style images from any phrase they choose. Designed to be a standalone app, it will also seamlessly integrate into Messages and Notes. Users can create images inspired by their own writings or even by photos of friends. It’s important to note that these images will retain a whimsical, non-realistic style to avoid any confusion with real-life photographs.

Genmoji

Another innovative feature, Genmoji, will enable users to create any emoji they desire, breaking away from the standard Unicode characters. So, if you envision a dog munching on pancakes or an alligator skateboarding, Genmoji will facilitate your creative pursuits. Like Image Playground, Genmoji can also be crafted using photos, but recipients must also have iOS 18 for full visibility.

Image Wand

As an extension of Image Playground, this function will enhance the Notes app by allowing users to insert relevant images based on context. On iPad, users can create rudimentary sketches and let Image Wand generate polished visuals to accompany their notes.

Siri Enhancements

iOS 18.1 will feature preliminary updates for Siri, which include a new display glow. However, many of the more sophisticated functionalities—like onscreen awareness or personal context—are still in development. The advanced capabilities, such as letting Siri interact meaningfully with content you’re viewing, will come later.

Mail Improvements

The Mail app will also see enhancements, automatically sorting incoming messages into designated categories to streamline your inbox.

Priority Notifications

With this new feature, notifications deemed important will appear at the top of your stack to ensure you never miss crucial updates.

ChatGPT Integration

A noteworthy feature would enable Siri to pass complicated queries to OpenAI's ChatGPT, but this functionality won’t debut in iOS 18.1.

Language Support

Currently, Apple Intelligence is only available in U.S. English, but additional language support is planned for the future.

Anticipated Rollouts

As for the timeline of availability for these features:

iOS 18.2

Expected before the end of 2024, this update should include Image Playground, Genmoji, and the long-awaited ChatGPT integration into Siri.

iOS 18.3

Likely arriving in January, this version may introduce new capabilities for Siri.

iOS 18.4

Targeted for around March 2025, this update will bring the majority of the Apple Intelligence features for Siri and may introduce expanded language support.

Final Thoughts

The iOS 18.1 release is highly anticipated and is set to launch on Monday, October 28. Although fans will have to wait for many sought-after features, the promise of ongoing updates and refinement is a reassuring prospect. Keep an eye on Apple’s future announcements as we edge closer to a more AI-integrated experience!
