WWE has just made a seismic move in the wrestling world, and it’s targeting the heart of lucha libre! In an announcement that shook the industry, WWE confirmed its intent to acquire Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, the revered Mexican wrestling giant founded by Antonio Peña.
The deal, unveiled in a press release on Monday, comes through a partnership with Fillip, a prominent sports and entertainment holding company in Mexico. If everything goes according to plan, the finalization is expected by the third quarter of 2025, pending standard closing conditions.
The blockbuster news was first shared during the WrestleMania 41 Countdown show in Las Vegas, with WWE powerhouse Paul "Triple H" Levesque leading the charge alongside Fillip Chairman Alberto Fasja, AAA’s Marisela Peña and Dorian Roldán Peña, legendary WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, and rising star El Hijo del Vikingo.
Mark Your Calendars: New Crossover Event!
As part of this historic acquisition, WWE is thrilled to announce an exhilarating new crossover show titled "Worlds Collide." Set to take place on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, this event promises to deliver a thrilling clash of titans with top talents from both WWE and AAA facing off in an electrifying showdown.
Triple H emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, "AAA has a rich cultural heritage with some of the most passionate fans in the world. Partnering with the Peña family allows us to merge WWE’s global reach with AAA’s incredible legacy, paving the way for exciting new opportunities ahead."
A Rich Legacy Continued!
Founded in 1992 by the legendary Antonio Peña, AAA has been the launching pad for wrestling icons such as Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and Penta. After over three decades of being family-operated, the Peña family assures fans that this monumental deal will honor AAA’s legacy rather than diminish it.
"Our trust could not be better placed than with one of the biggest sports entertainment enterprises in the world," remarked Dorian Roldán Peña, reflecting the family’s commitment to maintaining AAA’s heritage.
WWE's Global Ambitions Revealed!
This partnership marks another significant step in WWE’s strategy of global expansion, building on its recent collaborations with TNA and Pro Wrestling NOAH. With an eye on dominating new markets, especially in Latin America, this strategic move reinforces WWE’s ambition to amplify its presence worldwide.
Hugo López-Velarde, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Fillip, expressed excitement about the venture: "We look forward to collaborating with WWE and TKO to safeguard AAA’s future." All signs point to a new era in wrestling that fans won't want to miss!
