SINGAPORE – With the polls set for May 3, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasizes that voters should assess candidates based not only on individual merit but also on the political parties they represent.
Addressing a press conference on April 19, where the People’s Action Party (PAP) announced its candidates for Ang Mo Kio GRC and three adjoining single-member constituencies, SM Lee highlighted the importance of understanding the broader implications of votes. He stated that a vote for an MP is inherently a vote for their party and its governance mandate.
He remarked, "Singaporeans need to consider what these candidates can contribute and how their party’s vision aligns with Singapore's future. We’re presenting a strong team capable of leading the nation effectively, and we hope to earn your trust in this process."
In an exciting development, the PAP is rolling out 32 fresh candidates—the largest influx of new faces in decades. SM Lee praised the diversity and dedication of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s team, expressing confidence in their potential impact.
Highlighting the significance of ministerial quality, SM Lee pointed out that the caliber of MPs directly influences the selection of future ministers. "To ensure we have capable leaders, we must first cultivate strong, capable MPs from the ground up," he explained.
He acknowledged the bittersweet nature of political renewal, especially concerning MPs stepping aside. SM Lee stated, "Change is necessary. While new faces bring fresh perspectives, it also means we must bid farewell to some familiar names. It’s a natural part of the cycle of leadership."
Responding to inquiries about previously unsuccessful candidates shifting to new constituencies, such as Victor Lye, he clarified, "These strategic decisions are not about placing 'losers' in safer areas; rather, they are about giving experienced individuals fresh opportunities to serve where they are most needed."
On the topic of the Workers’ Party manifesto, SM Lee noted that good ideas can emerge from any source. He emphasized, "Both the government and the opposition contribute valuable proposals, and it's commendable when ideas from discussions lead to actionable policies for Singaporeans."
As this marks SM Lee’s first election since stepping down as prime minister in 2024, he articulated his role during this transition. "My focus is to assist the PM in securing a robust electoral victory, supporting him in various capacities as needed. While my role may be less demanding than that of a sitting prime minister, I am committed to easing his responsibilities as much as possible," he stated.
Reflecting on the progress made under PM Wong’s leadership, SM Lee expressed satisfaction, noting that Wong has effectively established himself and built a cohesive team, winning the approval of Singaporeans.
The upcoming election represents not just a personal milestone for SM Lee but also a critical moment for Singapore's political landscape.
