End of an Era as Maliki Osman Announces Retirement
In a significant move, Maliki Osman, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, declared his retirement from politics on April 21, well ahead of the upcoming 2025 General Election. This decision marks the end of a remarkable 24-year journey in public service.
In his heartfelt social media announcement, Dr. Maliki emphasized the importance of renewing leadership within the People's Action Party (PAP), inviting fresh, younger voices into Parliament. After five successful terms since 2001, he and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong concluded that it was the right time for him to pass the torch to a new candidate.
A Meaningful Transition for East Coast GRC
Dr. Maliki's first priority is ensuring a seamless transition for the East Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC), where he has served as one of the incumbent Members of Parliament. He has already introduced his successor, Madam Hazlina Abdul Halim, the former CEO of Make-A-Wish Singapore.
"I am confident they will serve residents well," he stated, displaying his commitment to the community even in his final months as an MP.
Reflections on a Rewarding Political Career
In his emotional farewell, Dr. Maliki reflected on the enriching experiences he enjoyed serving in various capacities, including Sembawang GRC and East Coast GRC, as well as his role as mayor of South East Community Development Council. He expressed profound gratitude to Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong for the trust placed in him and acknowledged the invaluable support from grassroots leaders and the community.
"Thank you, dear residents, for welcoming me into your homes and lives," he expressed. "I will always treasure our shared memories."
Academic Foundations and Political Ascendancy
Dr. Maliki, who holds a PhD in social work from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, transitioned from academia to politics at the age of 36. He was part of a six-member team, led by then Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan, that won Sembawang GRC in the 2001 general election.
Over his political career, he held various positions including Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Community Development, and National Development, eventually climbing to Minister of State for Defence and National Development. He played a pivotal role in community improvement projects and spearheaded initiatives to bolster Singapore's food security.
International Diplomacy and Humanitarian Efforts
Most recently, Dr. Maliki represented Singapore at an international conference in Egypt, discussing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. His commitment to global diplomacy included meetings with Palestinian leadership and efforts to enhance educational opportunities for Palestinians through scholarship programs.
He also provided $1.3 million in humanitarian aid for Gaza earlier this year, underscoring his dedication to international community support.
A Multifaceted Leader with a Passion for Music
Outside of politics, Dr. Maliki is a man of many talents. His musical skills include playing both the guitar and the guzheng, contributing to cultural events and concerts. Whether performing with his indie band Surreal at an anti-drug concert or charming audiences at National Day receptions, his artistry has endeared him to many.
As Dr. Maliki Osman steps away from the political stage, he leaves behind a rich legacy of service, community engagement, and international diplomacy, marking the end of a significant chapter in Singapore's political landscape.
