KAMPALA - In a concerning development, a case of mpox has been confirmed in Nakasongola jail in central Uganda, as reported by a prison spokesperson on Tuesday.

The infected individual has been isolated and is currently receiving medical treatment.

World Health Organization's Declaration

This announcement comes in the wake of the World Health Organization's declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency for the second time in just two years, following a surge in cases linked to an outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

This outbreak has reportedly cascaded into Burundi, Uganda, and Rwanda, raising alarms among health authorities.

Concern for Uganda's Prison System

The potential for an outbreak within Uganda's overcrowded prison system poses a significant challenge for public health officials.

Mpox, a disease that can be transmitted through close contact, often presents with mild symptoms such as flu-like illnesses and painful lesions.

However, it can turn fatal in rare instances, making rapid intervention critical.

Investigation and Preventative Measures

Frank Baine, spokesperson for the Uganda Prison Service, indicated that the inmate's background is under investigation, as he was unable to secure bail due to a murder charge.

"We suspect he may have contracted the virus before his incarceration," Baine noted, emphasizing that the situation was being closely monitored.

Prison authorities plan to implement preventative measures based on systems established during the COVID-19 pandemic to help curb the potential spread of mpox.

Vaccination Efforts

According to recent reports, Uganda's mpox case count has climbed to 41, with further updates anticipated from Health Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Ainebyoona later today.

In an effort to mitigate the outbreak, the Ugandan health ministry had previously secured 2,000 doses of mpox vaccines from the Africa CDC.

However, it remains unclear whether vaccination efforts have commenced.

Campaigns in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Meanwhile, health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo have begun their first mpox vaccination campaign, reflecting the urgent need for increased vaccination rates to prevent further spread.

Concerns Regarding Marburg Virus

Compounding concerns, Uganda is also on high alert for the potential transmission of the highly infectious Marburg virus, which has recently emerged from an outbreak in neighboring Rwanda.
