Bengaluru:
Hospitals across the city are experiencing a concerning surge in influenza cases among pregnant women, with reports indicating that at least two expectant mothers present flu-like symptoms each day over the past six weeks. Medical experts have raised alarms about this trend as the flu virus poses significant risks, particularly during pregnancy.
Expert Opinions
According to Dr. Priya SP Patil, a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at Altius Hospital, the rise in cases can be attributed to a combination of immune system changes, seasonal variations, and increased gatherings during the holiday period. “Pregnant and postpartum women, especially those within two weeks after giving birth, are at a heightened risk of contracting influenza due to the considerable immune system changes that occur during pregnancy,” she warns. Dr. Patil has noted that the severity of symptoms tends to escalate as the pregnancy advances, with expectant mothers in their later trimesters facing even greater dangers.
The risks are particularly pronounced for women with pre-existing health conditions like diabetes or cardiopulmonary disorders. “These individuals are not only more susceptible to the flu but are also likely to face more severe complications and higher hospitalization rates compared to the general population,” Dr. Patil cautions. Serious symptoms, such as dehydration, breathing difficulties, and high fevers, require prompt medical intervention to safeguard both the mother and the baby.
Physiological Challenges
Furthermore, Dr. Usha BR, a fertility consultant and robotic surgeon at Fortis Hospital, shed light on the physiological challenges pregnant women face when dealing with infections. “The immune system is naturally suppressed during pregnancy to prevent rejection of the fetus, which increases susceptibility to infections. Moreover, the hormonal changes can impede respiratory function,” she explained. Dr. Usha highlighted a sharp increase in reported cases, noting that her hospital has witnessed a rise from two cases per day to over ten per week.
Statistics and Predictions
Influenza cases among pregnant women currently represent a staggering 30-40% of patients being seen daily. Dr. Shwetha Krishnamurthy, another consultant obstetrician, predicts that while there may be a gradual decrease as temperatures rise in February, the trend is likely to persist throughout January.
Understanding the Environmental Factors:
Health professionals attribute this rise not only to individual health concerns but also to environmental factors. “The recent drop in nighttime temperatures and low humidity levels creates a breeding ground for respiratory illnesses. Holiday-related activities, such as travel and crowded gatherings, have exacerbated the spread of infections,” noted Dr. Sachin Kumar, a senior pulmonologist at Sakra World Hospital. As people return to the city from trips, they may unknowingly bring the virus with them, fueling the outbreak.
Recommendations for Preventing Flu Transmission
To combat this worrying trend, doctors emphasize the importance of strict hygiene practices. Wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, and keeping warm are some of the recommended precautions to reduce the risk of influenza transmission.
With this alarming increase in cases, pregnant women are urged to remain vigilant and consult healthcare providers at the first sign of flu symptoms. Taking necessary precautions can protect both the mother and the developing baby during this vulnerable time.
