A rare celestial spectacle unfolded on the night of October 10, as astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) witnessed an extraordinary display of auroras, amplified by a powerful solar storm. NASA’s Don Pettit and Matthew Dominick were treated to a mesmerizing view that exceeded their expectations.

Describing the Experience

Pettit described the experience as “stunning” in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) the following day. He eloquently noted, “The sun goes burp and the atmosphere turns red,” capturing the surreal beauty of the scene. The brilliant auroras were a result of a strong geomagnetic storm triggered by a substantial coronal mass ejection (CME) that sent a massive cloud of solar plasma hurtling through space.

Initial Skepticism

Initially, Pettit and Dominick were skeptical about the auroras that night, believing the light show would be lackluster. As Pettit recounted, 'We were out of energy after a long day and reluctant to set our cameras up again for what we thought would be another 'no show.' But as we peeked out of the Cupola windows, the sight jolted us into action.'

A Magical Experience

What lay before them was nothing short of magical. Pettit described the scene vividly, saying the ISS appeared as if it had been transformed into a 'miniature dimension' amid a neon display. 'We weren’t just flying over the auroras; we were flying through them, and it was blood red,' he remarked. The astronauts quickly set up their four cameras, capturing the incredible natural light show as it unfolded.

Experienced Astronauts

Both Pettit and Dominick are experienced in capturing stunning images from space, often sharing glimpses of Earth’s wonders with the public. This week, Dominick also showcased dramatic photos of Hurricane Milton, as it approached Florida, taken from the Crew Dragon capsule, Endeavour, where he and his fellow astronauts are preparing for their return journey to Earth.
